Buddyfight Card Trivia!! – Legends Come Alive, Part 1
March 21, 2016
If you’re a big fan of the various cultural myths and legends of the world, you might have recognized some of the figures and creatures that have made an appearance in Legend World (it is called Legend World, after all!). As part of our trivia series, today we’re going to shed some light on where these legendary beings have gotten their names from!
NORSE MYTHOLOGY

Norse mythology is featured quite prominently in various media and games. Originating from the Scandinavian and North Germanic peoples, it encompasses various folktales of numerous deities, creatures and heroes, including the god of thunder Thor and the giant serpent Jormungandr.
Creatures
Of course, no mythology is complete without mythological creatures, and Norse mythos has their own share of fantastic beings. “Corpse Swallower, Hraesvelgr” is named after Hraesvelgr, a giant that takes the form of an eagle, whose wings cause the wind to blow when he flies. “Evil Dragon, Nidhogg” on the other hand, gets its name from the dragon Nidhogg, a wicked dragon that chews on Yggdrasill, a sacred, mythical tree that links the nine worlds of Norse mythology. Sleipnir is an 8-legged horse and the steed of the god Odin, who rides it throughout the nine worlds.
Valkyries
The Valkyries are warrior maidens who have power over who is slain in battle. They choose from among the fallen and bring them to Valhalla, a hall where they are served mead by the Valkyries. These chosen dead, known as the Einherjar, prepare to fight alongside the god Odin during the events of Ragnarok (more on Ragnarok after this!). “Valkyrie, Assault Cara“, “Valkyrie, Brilliant Brynhildr” and “Valkyrie, All-knowing Alwidol” are examples of the Valkyries.
Loki the Trickster & Ragnarok
Ragnarok is an event in the future that results in the end of the world, brought about by Loki, the trickster god who was imprisoned for his part in slaying another god, Baldr. He is aided by his sons Fenrir, a giant wolf, and the world serpent Jormungandr.
The coming of Ragnarok was signalled with three consecutive winters without any summer between, known as the Fimbulwinter. During the events of Ragnarok, the gods and their various enemies led by Loki would engage in a fierce battle on the battlefield of Vigrior.
GREEK MYTHOLOGY
【 Ελληνική μυθολογία 】
【 Ελληνική μυθολογία 】
Greek mythology is more widely known than Norse mythology due to its use in popular fiction. It contains the beliefs and teachings of the ancient Greeks, and includes their ideas on the origins of the world as well as stories of their gods, heroes, and various magical creatures. Prominent figures include Zeus, the king of gods, Hades, god of the underworld, and the legendary heroes Perseus and Heracles.
Perseus is one of the sons of Zeus, a demi-god whose heroic deeds include the slaying of the Gorgon Medusa, and rescuing his future wife Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus. Medusa, along with the other Gorgons Stheno and Euryale, are featured in Buddyfight as “Gorgon Three Sisters, Euryale“, “Gorgon Three Sisters, Medusa” and “Gorgon Three Sisters, Stheno“.
A lesser known multi-headed dog, Orthrus, also makes its appearance in Future Card Buddyfight! Brother to the better known Cerberus, Orthrus was a two-headed guard dog and the father of the Nemean Lion. Orthrus and the Nemean Lion were slain by another Greek hero, Heracles, as a part of his Twelve Labours.
Some the above cards have the attribute [Olympus], which is a direct reference to the place where the Twelve Olympians – major deities in the mythology – resided.
And that’s it for part 1 of the Legend World Trivia! Stay tuned next week for more!!
